Última Characteristics of one sea winter Atlantic salmon stock caught on Elorn river from 1974 to 1984 ArchiMer Prouzet, Patrick; Gaignon, Jean-louis. From observations gathered on grilse populations sampled during the fishing period (March -mid-June) or after the fishing season, the authors noted: a strong heterogeneity and length, the mean value of which increase from May to December, a sex-ratio not different from 1 male for 1 female, a high relative fecundity superior to those of spring salmon population sampled. The comparison between fish of local and foreign origins did not allow to observe significant differences between the biological characteristics studied (weight, length, sex-ratio and fecundity). Abundance and biomass of an unexploited ormer population in the vicinity of Saint-Malo (northern Brittany) are estimated using a stratified sampling technique. Examinations are made be diving at 200 sites. The mean biomass of the population is about 400 tons but the stock is not evenly distributed over the studied area: the greatest densities are observed on schist substrate. Size and weight frequency distribution reveal a "top-heave" structure due to an accumulation of old individuals with low production. The growth in length of the two European anglerfishes (Lophius piscatorius and L. budegassa ) was studied from samples collected in ICES areas VII and VIII during 1984. Because of the difficulty on otoliths reading, a method based on illicium sections was developed. Moreover, morphological features of the sections can be useful in separating the two species. The location of winter rings was measured; length-frequency analysis and backcalculation was used as a first attempt to validate direct ageing. Growth was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's equation based on the estimation of total lengths at the time of annual ring formation. The growth in weight and the length-weight relationship were calculated for both sexes separately and combined during and after spawning periods. Preliminary investigations on the characteristics of commercial catches (from Sete and Grau-du-Roi commercial fishing grounds) were also carried out.
